KACS Election Season is Here
*The Kalamazoo Section of the American Chemical Society will soon be conducting elections for the 2027 Executive Committee. We are currently seeking nominees for two important positions: Chair-Elect and Alternate Councilor.
The Chair-Elect serves on the Executive Committee and helps guide the future direction of our section before assuming the role of Chair. The Alternate Councilor represents our section at ACS Council meetings when the Councilor is unavailable and provides valuable input on Society business.
At this time, we do not have any candidates for either position. We encourage members to consider serving or to nominate a fellow member who is willing to participate. These roles are an excellent opportunity to contribute to the local chemistry community, develop leadership experience, and help shape the future of KACS. For more detailed information on each position please visit our website https://kalamazooacs.org/operations-manual/
If you are interested, or would like to recommend a member for consideration, please contact any member of the Executive Committee. Nominations are needed prior to the election ballot being finalized.
Your participation is essential to maintaining a vibrant and active local section. We hope to hear from you!

Educate and Entertain Through Chemistry Day at the Museum
Chemistry Day at the Museum – our National Chemistry Week activity, Saturday, October 17, noon-4 p.m., free and open to the public
Get ready to educate, entertain, and entice the next generation to the wonders of chemistry and watch the smiles on the faces of children and adults alike! The theme of the 2026 National Chemistry Week celebration is Chemistry Under Construction. Do you have a great activity or experiment you can share with an audience of learners of all ages? Are you interested in demonstrating one of several experiments that are performed every year at this event? Do you have no idea what this event is about but are willing to contribute a few hours of your time on a Saturday in October to brighten the day of young scientists-to-be in our community? We need your help to make this event a success! If you have not yet volunteered there is still time! Please email Hershel Jude or Carol Guerrero. They would welcome your participation!
LAST CALL FOR Volunteers for the 150th ACS Anniversary Event at the Kalamazoo Valley Museum
To celebrate the 150th anniversary of the American Chemical Society, the Kalamazoo Local Section (KACS) has been partnering with the Kalamazoo Valley Museum to educate the public about how “Chemistry is Everywhere.” Through immersive planetarium experiences and interactive exhibit-based engagement, visitors explore local contributions to chemistry while connecting with KACS members who are on-site to share insights and information about the organization. These activities are designed to strengthen community ties, promote chemistry literacy and invite deeper involvement in the mission of the ACS. On Saturday, November 7 from 1 to 3 p.m., the Kalamazoo Valley Museum will host our last of four free community programs in this year-long celebration. The event has been supported by an ACS Innovative Project Grant.

Visitors may explore local contributions to science and history throughout the museum galleries and engage with KACS members on site. The event will also include 2 showings at 1 p.m. and 2 p.m. of an immersive planetarium show Elements in Orbit, which examines the unseen chemistry of space with a focus on planets and constellations visible this season. Planetarium tickets will be available on a first-come, first-served basis. Visit kalamazoomuseum.org for more information.
KACS members interested in volunteering for this our last “ACS 150th Celebration Days” at the KVM on November 7 are encouraged to contact Carol Guerrero (cguerrero@kvcc.edu).
