Comments from the 2026 KACS Chair

2026 Chair, Kalamazoo ACS Local Section
This year is a truly special one for the ACS community. The theme, âChemistry is Everything,â defines our impact as we celebrate the 150th anniversary of the American Chemical Society. Chemistry is everything not only in the work we do, but in the connections we build with students, educators, and our broader community.

Our Local Section has a strong tradition of outreach, education, and service. I am thankful for everyone who volunteered at and attended our events last year. This year continues to be just as busy. Our programs and events thrive because members step forward to volunteer their time and expertise.
In 2026, we once again have many opportunities for you to get involved:

If you are interested in volunteering, please reach out to our event coordinators or me directly. We would be delighted to help you find an opportunity that matches your interests and availability.
Let us make this anniversary year not only a celebration of 150 years of chemistry, but also a demonstration of dedication and spirit of our Local Section. When we come together, we show our community that chemistry truly is everything.
Go âInto the Woodsâ with Chemistry!
Chemists Celebrate Earth Week will be held April 19-25. The theme is âInto the Woods with Chemistryâ https://www.acs.org/education/ccew.html (For relevant activity handouts you may contact KACSâ CCEW coordinator Carol Guerrero at cguerrero@kvcc.edu).

Support Chemistry Educators through BCCE 2026
The Biennial Conference on Chemical Education (BCCE 2026)âACSâs premier conference for chemistry educatorsâwill be held July 26â30, 2026, in Madison, WI, with a focus on reflecting on past progress while shaping the future of chemistry education.
We invite ACS Local Sections to support this flagship event by supporting the attendance of a high school teacher and/or two-year college instructor from your section. These contributions expand access to professional development, strengthen localânational connections, and invest directly in the chemistry education workforce. [Our KACS has support budgeted for attendance at this meeting; check https://kalamazooacs.org/grants/ if there is interest]
All participating Local Sections will be recognized by the conference. For attendance support options, please contact the BCCE 2026 organizing team at bcce2026@union.wisc.edu.
