Meet our New KACS Secretary
Dr. Tiffany Crawford, 2026-28 KACS Secretary, earned her Bachelors degree in chemistry from the University of South Carolina Honors College and a Ph.D. in Analytical Chemistry from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Her graduate school research focused on utilizing ion mobility spectrometry to separate isomeric compounds before MS analysis. She began her career at Kalsec after graduation, where she works in the analytical team with a focus on GC-MS. She has volunteered at the Kalamazoo Valley Museum during Chemistry Day and recently served as a mentor for Project SEED.
We offer sincere thanks to Jacob Kirkendall for his conscientious service to our section as secretary over the past four years.

Project SEED—Looking Forward
By Doug Williams
Thank you to all who have supported our KACS Project SEED program. I am inspired by your generosity. This year (2026) will be our 31st year participating. As reported in previous newsletters, we finance this program through contributions from ACS (50%) and local member contributions and local section allocations (50%). Although our section has healthy cash reserves, we are gradually spending from our reserves when we support more than two students per year. I am exploring options to stably finance an expanded program of five to six internships at an added cost of about $6,000 per year and I welcome your ideas.
Secondly, I am seeking a partner to assist me in coordinating our program this year. It is not difficult and it is rewarding to see students experience the joy (and challenges) of research. It is also a great opportunity to meet and learn more about our dedicated research mentors and their institutions. If you are curious, please contact me at projectseed@kalamazooacs.org. The coordinator’s role is well organized and strongly supported by ACS headquarters. Serving has been one of my greatest pleasures as an ACS member.

Celebrate 150 Years of ACS at the Kalamazoo Valley Museum
The first opportunity to participate in the KACS’ celebration of 150 years of the American Chemical Society will be held at the Kalamazoo Valley Museum on Saturday, February 14, from 1-3 p.m. Learn more about how “Chemistry is Everything.” Explore local contributions to chemistry while connecting with KACS members who will be on-site to share insights and information about the organization. Experience a free planetarium show, “Elements in Orbit,” at 2 p.m. (Planetarium tickets will be available on a first-come, first-served basis.) Visit www.kalamazoomuseum.org for more information.
