SUMMARY:Lake Michigan College Spring Science Seminar - Professor Mark Mason
DESCRIPTION:Mark R. Mason\, Professor in the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry at the University of Toledo\, will present the Spring Science Seminar\, “Green Chemistry Principles for the Design and Use of Safer Chemicals\,” from 3-4:15 p.m. Thursday\, April 21\, in Room C-316 of the Main Building of Lake Michigan College’s Benton Harbor campus.  \n\n\n\nAfter serving as a postdoctoral associate with Dr. Andrew Barron at Harvard University from 1991-1993\, Mason began his faculty career in 1993 as Assistant Professor of Chemistry at the University of Louisville. In 1998\, he moved his research group to Toledo where he currently serves as Professor of Chemistry. In 2011\, he became the Founding Director of the UT School of Green Chemistry and Engineering (SGCE)\, serving in that role until 2020.   \n\n\n\nHis current research focuses on the development of catalysts comprised of the Earth-abundant elements aluminum and iron for applications in organic synthesis and polymer production. Past research has included polymerization catalysis\, ligand development\, and fundamental chemistry of aluminum and gallium compounds.   \n\n\n\nMason received his bachelor’s degree in chemistry in 1985 from Bowling Green State University and his Ph.D. in inorganic chemistry in 1991 from Iowa State University.   \n\n\n\nThis seminar is free and open to the public.  \n\n\n\nFor more information\, email jbeck@lakemichigancollage.edu or call 269-695-2986.

SUMMARY:Seminar\, Dr. Daniela Arias-Rotondo\, Kalamazoo College Faculty
DESCRIPTION:Kalamazoo College Assistant Professor of Chemistry\, \n\n\n\nTitle: Photoredox Catalysis: An Inorganic Chemist’s View of Organic Synthesis \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRegister: https://zoom.us/meeting/register/tJMpfu2hpzojHdCc6A5pCxPLdpmVN0xTQzFz \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbstract: Photoredox Catalysis uses photoactive coordination complexes of transition metals to catalyze organic reactions. This strategy has enabled previously elusive transformations\, opening the door to new bond disconnections and functionalizations. In the past decade or so\, photoredox catalysis has been extensively studied by organic chemists around the world; the majority of these efforts is focused on the development of new synthetic methods. In-depth mechanistic studies\, however\, have somewhat lagged behind. This talk includes part of my work in photoredox catalysis (from the point of view of an inorganic chemist). I will also summarize some projects that go beyond method development\, highlighting collaborative work by groups that integrate other branches of chemistry.

SUMMARY:October 2021 – Seminar
DESCRIPTION:Dr. Gellert Mezei\, Removal of anionic contaminants from water using nanojars \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nZoom Event – Email edwardwthomas@gmail.com for an invite to event \n\n\n\nSelective binding and transport of highly hydrophilic anions is ubiquitous innature\, as anion binding proteins can differentiate between similar anions withover a million-fold efficiency. While comparable selectivity has occasionally beenachieved for certain anions using small\, artificial receptors\, the selective bindingof certain anions\, such as sulfate in the presence of carbonate\, remains a verychallenging task. Nanojars have emerged as a new class of anion binding andextraction agents of unparalleled efficiency. Nanojars are neutral\, nano-sizedtoroidal copper(II)-hydroxide/pyrazolate assemblies comprised of a series ofhomologous oligomerization isomers of the formula [anion{Cu(OH)(pz)} n ] (Cu n ; n= 26−36; pz = pyrazolate\, C 3 H 3 N 2 – )\, which strongly bind hydrophilic anions such ascarbonate\, sulfate and phosphate\, as well as the toxic anions arsenate andchromate. By using a combination of single-crystal X-ray crystallography\,electrospray-ionization mass spectrometry (ESI-MS) and 1 H-NMR spectroscopy\, ithas been determined that the various Cu n nanojars are based on a combination ofthree or four [Cu(OH)(pz)] m metallamacrocycles (m = 6−14\, except 11)\, tightly heldtogether by a network of hydrogen bonding and Cu-O interactions. Two challenging problems in the field of anion binding and extraction havebeen successfully addressed by using nanojars as extraction agents. First\, nanojarsare able to extract even the most hydrophilic anions\, such as carbonate andsulfate\, from water into aliphatic hydrocarbons. Second\, nanojars are able toselectively extract strongly hydrophilic anions in the presence of less hydrophilicanions. Moreover\, rigidification of the nanojar outer shell by tethering pairs ofpyrazole ligands together leads to further increase of selectivity. Nanojarsprepared with tethered pyrazole ligands of the formula pz(CH 2 ) x pz selectively bindeither carbonate (when x = 2) or sulfate anions (when x = 3). Anion extractionstudies have shown that by using nanojars\, the concentration of arsenate andchromate ions in aqueous media can be lowered below EPA-permitted levels indrinking water. Furthermore\, nanojars can be used for the selective sequesteringof CO 2 from the air in the presence of other atmospheric gases by conversion tocarbonate.
